A sore throat is a painful but common\naffliction that everyone suffers from on occasion. It may be the first sign of\na cold, the result of strained vocal cords or a symptom of a more serious\ncondition such as strep throat. As miserable as a sore throat can make you\nfeel, in many cases symptoms clear up quickly and without medical treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Are the Symptoms of a Sore Throat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms of a sore throat include pain, scratchiness,\ndry throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, swollen neck or jaw glands and\nswollen or inflamed tonsils. You may also have a fever, chills, cough, runny\nnose, sneezing, headache, muscle and joint aches, nausea and vomiting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Causes a Sore Throat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most sore throats are the result of viral\ninfections, often related to the common cold or flu. Bacterial infections can\nalso lead to sore throats. Some of the more common ones include strep throat,\ntonsillitis, whooping cough and diphtheria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional factors that can cause a sore throat\ninclude allergies, acid reflux, environmental irritants, dry air and strained\nvocal cords. Occasionally a more serious condition, such as a tumor or HIV, can\ncause a sore throat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatment & Prevention of Sore Throat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Home remedies are often the most effective\ntreatment method for a sore throat. Try gargling with warm salt water\nperiodically through the day. Make sure you drink plenty of liquids, and use\nthroat lozenges and cough drops to relieve soreness and irritation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A humidifier is often helpful. Over-the-counter\npain relievers and decongestants are beneficial at providing relief as well. If\nyour sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection, you\u2019ll need to treat it\nwith antibiotics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are steps you can take to reduce your\nrisk of developing a sore throat in the future. Practice good hygiene by\nwashing your hands frequently with warm water and soap, cough or sneeze into a\ntissue or your sleeve and do not share food or utensils with others who are\nsick. <\/p>\n\n\n
