They are\nhighly curable if detected early, and often respond well to surgery or\nradiation treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancers in this region are classified according\nto where they are located in the body. They include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Oral cavity. <\/strong>This\nregion includes the lips, tongue, hard palate, gums, and mouth. <\/li><li><strong>Larynx.<\/strong>\nComprised of the vocal cords and epiglottis. <\/li><li><strong>Pharynx.<\/strong>\nThere are three sections of the throat: the nasopharynx (the upper portion,\nlocated behind the nose), oropharynx (the middle section, which includes the\nsoft palate and tonsils), and hypopharynx (the lower portion). <\/li><li><strong>Paranasal sinuses.<\/strong> The nasal cavity.<\/li><li><strong>Salivary glands.<\/strong> Located at the bottom of the mouth near the\njawbone. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other types of cancers in close proximity, like\nbrain tumors and thyroid cancer, behave very differently and are not considered\ncancers of the neck and throat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of Throat Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of neck and throat cancers are\ncaused by tobacco use; smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco both\nsubstantially increase your risk of cancer. Alcohol use, especially in people\nwho also smoke, is another contributing factor. Exposure to industrial toxins,\na diet high in red meats and processed foods, human papillomavirus (HPV),\nEpstein-Barr virus, and acid reflux can all add to your risk.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of Throat Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many symptoms of throat cancer are associated\nwith other, less serious conditions, so don\u2019t worry needlessly if you\nexperience some of these signs. Make an appointment with a doctor for a\nthorough exam and diagnosis if any of the following symptoms are persistent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Chronic cough (especially if\nyou are coughing up blood).<\/li><li>Hoarseness or other changes\nin your voice.<\/li><li>Difficulty swallowing.<\/li><li>Lumps or sores on the neck.<\/li><li>Ear or neck pain.<\/li><li>Sore throat.<\/li><li>Weight loss.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your doctor will attempt to rule out other,\nmore common causes first. They will examine your throat with a lighted scope\nand likely order a biopsy if an abnormality is spotted. Imaging tests,\nincluding X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and PET scans, can help your doctor see how\nfar your cancer has spread. Once diagnosed, the cancer will be assigned a stage\n(I-IV) that indicates its extent and helps determine which course of treatment\nto pursue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatment Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment for throat cancer depends on the\ntumor\u2019s size, location and whether it has spread to other areas of the body.\nRadiation therapy, surgery and chemotherapy \u2013 or a combination of the three \u2013\nmay be employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radiation therapy delivers radiation to the\ncancerous cells through X-rays or other high-energy beams, causing them to die.\nIt is most effective in early-stage cancers, where it may be the only treatment\nnecessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgery can be effective for cancers of various\nstages. Procedures to remove all or portions of your voice box (laryngectomy)\nor throat (pharymgectomy) may be necessary. If cancer has spread to the lymph\nnodes, a neck dissection to remove those cancerous cells may be recommended. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemotherapy relies on chemicals to kill cancer\ncells. It is often used in combination with radiation therapy for better\nresults. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following treatment, you may need speech\ntherapy or swallowing therapy, depending on the procedure(s) performed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prognosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If detected early, throat cancers have a cure\nrate of 90 percent.
